The Modest Girl Guide

 "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
1 Timothy 2:9-15

We have been asked why we name our dresses 'Patience, Meekness' and here I will attempt to answer this question. First, the names came from my dear friend and sister in Christ, Shelley, who designed these dresses. I cannot thank her enough for allowing us to start making these to sell for our adoption process. Please visit Shelley's family business, Arrows of Grace for great biblical material to encourage biblical family life, beautiful girlhood and more!

For several years the Lord has laid strongly on my heart the issue of femininity and true modesty.
Raising 4 daughters to glorify Him really opened my eyes to understanding this issue much more deeply than I have ever dreamed of.

When I was 14 way back in the days of poofy hair styles and leg warmers (I am giving away my age here!) everything was about my Jordache jeans and Nike tennis shoes. My clothes defined who I thought I was and also affected my relationships with other kids in my school. No Nikes-not popular!
Then at this young and impressionable age, I was scouted to become a model and so started my 8 year life of glamour and fashions and of course, much heartache!

Although at 21 when I came to know the Lord and He delivered me from darkness and into His glorious Light, there was still that part of me that continued to live in the fashions of this world, with my hair, my clothing etc. It still somehow defined who I was, or so I thought.

To me, I was a tom boy, rough and tough, noone was going to ever hurt me or trample on me, I was woman, hear me roar, and I had a loud roar!! I liked competing against boys, playing football, baseball, rugby even!  I delighted in looking tough in my cool jeans and combat boots...I was often referred to as a modern day hippy.  Sounds just like a daughter of the King right? hmmmm....

Slowly the Lord began to whisper to me through His word that my very being was not defined in my clothes or my hair, but in Who He is.  And I, as a child of the King of Kings was created to be beautiful, feminine, I was woman, a help meet to my husband, a keeper at home, and lover of my children...woman...delicate, weaker vessel, fashioned by God Himself to complete man, not compete with man. Meekness is not weakness!

So slowly but surely this once rough and tough tom boy started..gasp! wearing skirts...speaking softer and low and behold, she loved it! As soon as I started changing these very little parts of my wardrobe, men would hold open doors for me, I even had a gentleman tip his hat as I walked past him in Dunkin Donuts....the Lord showed me how beautiful it was to be a woman and also look and act like a woman.

So I am sharing all this to explain why we name our dresses. Threads of Hope was born out of great need...first and foremost to raise funds for our very expensive adoption process, but it was also born out of a great need to help clothe my daughters with modest, feminine clothing that is so scarce these days.  And to help provide other families who desire for their daughters to be clothed with modesty, femininity.  It is so true that when we dress feminine, we also behave more feminine. Now this may not be true for some, but we have found it to be true for us.  Our dresses have names that help us define biblical characteristics our daughters should strive to embrace that truly will enhance thier femininity.
